Phentermine Side Effects
We all know that every medication has some kind of side effect, whether easily noticable or more long-term. Lucky for us, Phentermine has not shown any signs of long-term side effects other than a small percentage of people becoming dependent on it.
I believe the reason for dependence is that they lead unhealthy lives that leave them drained of energy all the time, so they cannot stand it when they stop taking Phentermine and they don’t even feel like getting out of bed in the morning.
As with any medication that you’ve become even slightly addicted to, you could experience unpleasant side effects when withdrawing yourself from Phentermine use during at least several weeks. Before you stop taking your Phentermine prescription, please have a talk with your physician/doctor to see what the plan should be for gradual withdrawal.
An Introduction to Phentermine Side Effects
As with any medicine, side effects are possible with phentermine; however, not everyone who takes the medication will experience side effects. In fact, most people tolerate it quite well. In most cases, side effects occur when too much phentermine is taken.
Common Side Effects of Phentermine
Phentermine has been studied thoroughly in clinical trials. In these studies, the side effects that occur in a group of people taking the drug are documented and are then compared to side effects that occur in another group of people not taking the medicine. This way, it is possible to see what side effects occur, how often they appear, and how they compare to the group not taking the medicine. With newer medications, information about the exact percentages for these side effects are available. However, with older medications (such as phentermine), these statistics are not available.
In studies, phentermine side effects included:
- Insomnia
- Hyperactivity
- Restlessness
- Dizziness
- Unusual happy feelings (euphoria)
- Unusual unpleasant feelings (dysphoria)
- Dry mouth
- Unpleasant taste
- Diarrhea
- Constipation
- Sexual problems
Phentermine Side Effects to Report
Some side effects with phentermine, while occurring infrequently, are potentially serious and should be reported immediately to your healthcare provider. These include, but are not limited to:
- Signs of a life-threatening side effect known as primary pulmonary hypertension, such as:
-
- Difficulty breathing
- Chest pain
- Fatigue or weakness
- Dizziness or fainting
- Ankle swelling
- Blue lips or skin
- More outgoing or aggressive behavior than normal
- Strange behavior
- Hallucinations (seeing, hearing, or feeling things that are not really there)
- Agitation or restlessness
- High blood pressure (hypertension)
- A rapid heart rate (tachycardia)
- Feelings of a rapidly or forcefully beating heart (known as heart palpitations)
- A desire or need to take phentermine more frequently (or at a higher dose) than prescribed.
- Signs of an allergic reaction, including unexplained rash, hives, itching, unexplained swelling, wheezing, or difficulty breathing or swallowing.
Final Thoughts on Phentermine Side Effects
It is possible that you may experience some or none of the phentermine side effects listed in this article. Unfortunately, it can be difficult to tell whether any particular side effect (such as nausea) is actually caused by phentermine or other factors. Therefore, make sure to let your healthcare provider know if you develop any side effects while taking phentermine or if something “just does not seem right.” While it may not be a side effect, your healthcare provider will be able to diagnose and treat the problem.

My daughter takes this medicine, she has had acne ever since she has taken it. Do you think it could be a side affect?

Lisa, it certainly is, I’d recommend taking phentermine only if she really has no time to hit the gym and try to solve the problem in a healthy way.
